Create your own luck

As the year draws to a close, It’s time to ruminate a bit on what has been and could have been.

I turned 40 this May and truth be told, I don’t feel any more experienced nor any more wiser. I am not filthy rich and have just enough to get by. Yes, a little money in the bank does soothe the nerves but it doesn’t make you any wiser. nor Secure.

If at this stage, you are thinking where this is going, be warned — These are random musings. There. You’ve been warned.

I have always subscribed to the thought — right since the day I came across it — that one needs to put their head down and do the work that comes their way. Luck will eventually follow. Like something that keeps compounding and before you know it, you are King Midas ! The one with the golden touch.

I am a potter head (A die hard Harry Potter fan) and draw life lessons from time to time as I re read the 7 book series every year. One such interesting life lesson was about luck. During my current readings, some tiny thoughts on the topic snowballed into an avalanche that have nothing to do with the story itself.

I got thinking about my own luck. Where I am in life today. What brought me here ? My own action or lack of it ? For the most part I think I have allowed myself to go with the flow. That is not thinking too far ahead. But that could easily be me choosing to pass off lethargy in the guise of “taking one day at a time”.

And may be it’s not all black and white. There have been times when I have taken charge of the day and led from the front. While on others meekly caving in to the relatively more alpha(er) person on other days. Letting others dictate how my progress fared.

As I restarted some of my learnings to lay a foundation for a career in data science ( Nothing big. Just a role in this industry that can help build on my experience in Excel reporting, Operations Management, Quality & Training), I realised learning something new (or relearning the basics from school) can be so liberating. It makes you feel like you are in charge (again) of your fate. Sure, I might not land a new job or any job right away, but I do know that I don’t have to spend my days cribbing about the chap who decides my workload. I get to make my own luck. Luck’s Luck.
